Jury findings are being hotly debated in America and around the world right now. Karen Reed was charged by police with the second-degree murder of her boyfriend John in 2022. Reed's attorneys said that Karen Read was cover-up by other officers, citing court findings released in the case.
Investigators focused on Read while investigating other points of investigation.. A man has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree intoxication manslaughter and abandonment of a Boston police officer for dead in connection with the 2022 drowning deaths of his boyfriend and a Boston police officer in John O’Keeffe.
The county prosecutor argued in his arguments that the relationship between Read-44 and O’Keefe was turbulent and uneasy, leading to his being left for dead on January 29, 2022. Read's case charged him with second-degree murder and leaving the scene of a hit-and-run accident causing death while driving.
District Attorney Michael Morose stated that "after the mistrial, they plan to retry the case to a new jury because under Massachusetts law, Reed could face up to life in prison if convicted."
After Michael Morose acceptance, Morose also acknowledged that the family of John O’Keeffe is extremely grateful for their continued commitment and dedication to the long process for justice.
The defence accuse alleged the chief investigating officer in the case that "Michael Proctor tampered with evidence in the case and failed to conduct a proper investigation into O’Keeffe’s death."
County Assistant District Attorney Adam Lally said in his argument that Proctor's writings were "powerless" but had no bearing on the integrity of the agency's investigation.
However, Read's attorney Alan Jackson told CNN affiliate WCVB outside the courthouse, "Prosecutors have failed miserably in this case. No matter how long they try, we will not stop defending. Jackson said, "When an innocent person is wronged. This can happen when you make accusations. The prosecution had done inquiry by keeping eighteen on the conciliation inquiry."
The jury foreman says that despite strenuous and sustained efforts, the panel of six men and six women remained deadlocked in what some believe exceeded the standard of proof needed to convict Read. And others in the note noted that "the prosecution did not establish their case before the jury."
According to Higgins' statement, "he never saw O’Keeffe inside Albert's house, nor did he resent Read's neglect."
According to TA Associate Press, an affidavit –In-Chief by a forensic engineer, testified that if O’Keeffe had collided with a vehicle traveling faster than 20 mph, O’Keeffe's injuries should have been serious.
After the above incident, the jury stated that they had never seen such a deadlock, County Superior Court Judge Canone, after reading the charge around 11:00 a.m., sent a note that "Despite our commitment to the duty assigned to us, we find ourselves deeply divided by fundamental differences in our opinions and psychological states." Let's divide.
Defence attorney David urged the jury to be charged, saying Monday's jurors twice indicated they were "frustratingly deadlocked."

Kat Torres, an Instagram influencer and former Brazilian model, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for human trafficking and slavery of women. The BBC reported that Torres was convicted on June 28 in Rio de Janeiro after being caught in Maine and deported to Brazil in November 2022.
The investigation began when two Brazilian women vanished in early 2022, causing the FBI to launch a search in the US based on information that they were living with the wellness influencer. Torres had millions of followers on Instagram and was convicted of human trafficking and the slavery of one of those women.
Torres maintained her innocence from a Rio prison. She was crowned Miss Caieiras in 2012 and became a successful model before moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting. She later worked as a model in Paris and was photographed partying with Leonardo DiCaprio at an event in Cannes.
More than 20 women have come forward to share their harrowing experiences of living with Torres, including Desirrê Freitas and Leticia Maia Alvarenga, the two women who sparked the FBI search.
The BBC reviewed court documents and Freitas’ memoir about her experiences, which revealed that Torres recruited women to come work for her and offered them a place to stay at her mansion in Austin.
However, many of the women found reality was not what had been promised, and they found themselves working as prostitutes as punishment.
Torres' social media campaigns helped another woman, Ana, realize she had possibly been one of the victims. In November 2022, the police were able to convince Torres, Freitas, and Maia to attend a welfare check in person at Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Maine. By December, both women had been safely returned to Brazil.

Latest legal updates on A US judge reversed a verdict against NFL. In a significant legal twist a U.S. judge has overturned the monumental $4.7 billion judgment against the NFL concerning its 'Sunday Ticket' package. This decision has sent shockwaves through the sports and legal communities, reshaping the landscape of sports broadcasting and antitrust litigation. Read More on A US judge reversed a verdict against NFL.
The NFL's 'Sunday Ticket' package, which allows subscribers to view out-of-market games not broadcast locally has been a cornerstone of sports broadcasting since its inception in 1994. DirecTV now a subsidiary of AT&T has held exclusive rights to this package, providing fans with access to a wide array of games that would otherwise be unavailable.
However, in 2015, a class-action lawsuit was filed against the NFL and DirecTV by a group of subscribers. The plaintiffs argued that the exclusive deal between the NFL and DirecTV violated antitrust laws, artificially inflating prices and restricting consumer choice.
They contended that this arrangement prevented other potential broadcasters from entering the market and offering competitive pricing, thus harming consumers. Read More... A US judge reversed a verdict against NFL.
In 2022, after years of legal battles, a federal jury sided with the plaintiffs awarding a staggering $4.7 billion in damages. This judgment was one of the largest antitrust verdicts in sports history, reflecting the court's agreement with the plaintiffs' claims that the NFL's exclusive deal with DirecTV was anti-competitive.
The verdict was hailed as a victory for consumer rights, with many believing it would usher in a new era of competition and lower prices for sports broadcasting.
However, the NFL and DirecTV swiftly moved to appeal the decision, arguing that the judgment was flawed and that the exclusive arrangement was lawful and beneficial for both the league and its fans.
On August 3, U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez reversed the $4.7 billion judgment, citing several key reasons for the decision. In the detailed ruling Judge Philip Gutierrez found that the jury had been given improper instructions regarding antitrust laws and that the plaintiffs had failed to prove that the exclusive deal had caused harm to consumers on the scale they claimed.
Judge Philip Gutierrez emphasized that while the exclusive agreement might limit competition to some extent; it also provided significant benefits to consumers such as ensuring the availability of a comprehensive package of games that might not be feasible through multiple broadcasters. The judge also noted that the plaintiffs did not adequately demonstrate that the alleged harm outweighed these benefits.
Moreover, the judge highlighted procedural errors during the trial that could have influenced the jury's decision. These errors, according to the ruling, warranted a new trial to ensure a fair and just outcome.
The overturning of the $4.7 billion judgment has elicited a wide range of reactions from various stakeholders. The NFL and DirecTV have expressed relief and satisfaction with the ruling reiterating their belief that the 'Sunday Ticket' package benefits fans and the league alike. In a joint statement, they emphasized their commitment to providing high-quality, comprehensive football coverage and hinted at potential future innovations to enhance the viewing experience.
On the other hand, the plaintiffs and consumer advocacy groups have voiced their disappointment and concern. They argue that the decision undermines efforts to promote competition and protect consumers from monopolistic practices.
Some legal experts have also expressed surprise at the ruling, noting that it could set a precedent for future antitrust cases involving exclusive broadcasting rights.
If The overturning of the judgment also raises questions about the future of sports broadcasting. the exclusive deal between the NFL and DirecTV is ultimately upheld it could embolden other leagues and broadcasters to pursue similar arrangements potentially limiting consumer choice and maintaining high prices.
Controversy, if a new trial is ordered and the plaintiffs prevail it could pave the way for increased competition and lower prices in the sports broadcasting market.
The legal battle over the NFL's 'Sunday Ticket' package is far from over. The plaintiffs have indicated their intention to approch a new trial, and it remains to be seen how the courts will ultimately rule on this complex issue.
In the meantime, the NFL and DirecTV will continue to offer the 'Sunday Ticket' package under the current exclusive arrangement, providing fans with access to a wide array of games.
For now, the overturning of the $4.7 billion judgment marks a significant chapter in the on-going saga of sports broadcasting and antitrust law. As the legal proceedings continue stakeholders across the industry will be closely watching for further developments that could reshape the landscape of how fans access and enjoy their favourite sports.
Concusion on A US judge reversed a verdict against NFL. The decision to overturn the $4.7 billion judgment against the NFL represents a pivotal moment in the intersection of sports, law, and consumer rights.
As this case moves forward, it will undoubtedly serve as a critical reference point for future discussions and decisions regarding exclusive broadcasting rights and their impact on competition and consumers.
Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving story, as the final outcome could have far-reaching implications for the sports broadcasting industry and beyond.

The complete list of deals announced by Nationwide Building Society includes yet another round of mortgage rate reduction.
Following an extended period of rate increases, high street lenders are gradually beginning to lower mortgage rates.
As competition among lenders heats up, first-time buyers and those with lesser deposits are finally feeling the effects of mortgage rate decreases.
As lender competition heats up, first-time buyers and those with lesser deposits are finally feeling the effects of mortgage rate decreases.
Nationwide and Clydesdale currently provide rates that are nearly five percent for house buyers who put down five per cent. With a £999 charge, Clydesdale is providing a five-year fix of 5.02 per cent, while Nationwide's is 5.04 percent after the lender lowered rates by 0.25 per cent.
Likewise, TSB, NatWest, and HSBC have all reduced their rates by as much as 0.19, 0.15, and 0.35 percentage points, respectively.
Over the past few months, mortgage rates have been gradually declining, but mainly for borrowers with larger deposits.
After this week's rate reduction, Nationwide is offering the following comprehensive list of mortgage rate packages for first-time buyers:
• 2 year fixed rate at 75 per cent LTV with a £999 fee is 4.49 per cent
• 3 year fixed rate at 90 per cent LTV with a £999 fee is 5.04 per cent
• 3 year fixed rate at 95 per cent LTV with a £999 fee is 5.44 per cent
• 5 year fixed rate at 95 per cent LTV with a £999 fee is 5.04 per cent
Following the rate drop, the following is a comprehensive list of mortgage rate offers for new clients switching from building societies:
Following Nationwide's decision to raise rates, the following is a comprehensive list of mortgage rate offers for current clients who are relocating:
Henry Jordan, the director of Home at Nationwide Building Society, said: “These latest reductions will ensure that we have some of the most competitive rates on the market with a particular focus on supporting first-time buyers in what remains a challenging environment.”
A Which investigation? In August, the market-leading five-year fix rate dropped by 0.39 percentage points from July 1 to August 8. Nonetheless, the greatest offers for people with a mere 5% deposit decreased by a mere 0.09 percent during that same time frame.
The best offers are still available to individuals with greater equity. For customers who have built up 40% in equity or deposit, NatWest is offering a five-year fix at 3.77 per cent, which is currently the best rate available.
"We could see even more attractive mortgage deals as lenders respond to lower funding costs and increased competition," stated Nick Mendes of brokerage John Charcol. In addition to giving homeowners financial relief, this would incentivize first-time purchasers and encourage house movers, which would improve the housing market and the overall economy.
In 2025, it is anticipated that mortgage rates will drop even more, probably by 0.5 percentage points. The continuation of bank rate decreases and improving economic conditions will be the main drivers of this decline. Lenders will be more able to offer competitive rates as long as the economy is seen as stable and inflation is kept under control.
However, there may not be much longer for first-time buyers to take advantage of the favorable tax treatment if they want to climb the property ladder.
In the 2022 mini-Budget, the stamp duty threshold—a tax paid by home buyers—was raised to £425,000, saving first-time buyers thousands of pounds by avoiding the charge.
In April 2025, the tax-free maximum will return to £300,000 unless the Budget for the following month announces additional modifications.
Given that the average house sale currently takes 25 weeks from listing to completion, buyers have a limited window of opportunity to take advantage of lower rates due to the current higher threshold. If they miss it, they could have to pay an increase of up to £15,000.
With just two months left, first-time homebuyers should move quickly to avoid paying more in stamp duty. This is especially true if they plan to buy in southern England, where first-time buyers will likely face a significant increase in SDLT once the changes take effect in April. Izabella Lubowiecka, senior property researcher at Zoopla, stated as much.
“Those who intend to postpone making a purchase until after April 1st should make sure they account for and incorporate the increased stamp duty expenses into their total budget."
The Bank of England may have more good news for people planning to move in the upcoming months.
The market anticipates that the monetary policy committee of the central bank will keep the Bank Rate at 5 per cent when it makes its decision next week, but two further cuts are already priced in before the year ends, opening the door for additional mortgage rate decreases.
House prices have also increased as a result of renewed market confidence. According to the RICS survey, prices increased by 1% in August marking the first increase in value since October 2022. Read More... other opinion

In the early morning hours, groups of people begin to gather from various locations throughout the Tampa Bay area, including tents, bus shelters, and unfolded cardboard patches.
They arrive in wheelchairs, on bicycles, and foot. Some are escorted by social workers or driven in police cruisers. A few people tote backpacks. Some arrive empty-handed, their possessions piled in storage units, lent to friends, or misplaced throughout their arduous journey through homelessness.
Every Tuesday morning, Pinellas Hope and Tampa Hope, two shelters managed by the Catholic Charities Diocese of St. Petersburg conduct their intake to fill available beds for citizens.
This week saw the implementation of broad legislation mandating local governments to remove homeless persons from public areas, such as park sidewalks. The biggest communities in Tampa Bay probably won't see many changes to the law, which Governor Ron DeSantis described as a "law-and-order" measure that would facilitate people's access to services.
Still, a lot of people on the streets were confused by it.
People discussed their battles with addiction, mental health issues, and physical illnesses in dozens of interviews. A few had been incarcerated for years. Some who were struggling following an eviction or working while living on the streets claimed they were too embarrassed to discuss it.
The Tampa Bay Times talked to those who were waiting and hoping in the intake lines at both shelters to have a better understanding of the struggle to go from the streets to safe accommodation. Here are their viewpoints expressed in their own words.
I went to apply for an apartment yesterday. The price of roughly $1,000 sounded good. Then they inquire, "What is your salary?" Together, my partner and I earn $1,800. "Oh no, you don't qualify," they exclaimed. You must be earning three (3) times the rent.
It's just recently that I became homeless. I had a job, but my hours were constantly being reduced. I was employed in the cement industry. I was an electrical engineer who worked in a hotel. I practiced carpentry.
The majority of us do not abuse drugs or alcohol. We just occasionally become sick, even if we strive to work. And we just lack a backup plan when that occurs. What's left after that? The road's secrets.
I've got asthma and emphysema. My back was severely damaged as a result of my construction employment. Nowadays, I try to couch surf. If not, I'll sleep in my truck. My final property, I've considered selling it. But then what will I do?
I have an eviction and a conviction on my record, so many places tell me, "Don't waste your time; chances are you won't get it." I've held a few odd jobs, including hotel and restaurant work. I had focus, but then I grew accustomed to being out here.
I suffer with addiction. Coke, weed, and beer, I suffered a stroke around three months ago. I got out of the hospital and was doing well. Then I returned to this neighborhood, which wasn't too good.
Temptations are everywhere. I said "no" for the first two(2) weeks. I just attended church. I moved into transitional housing. But everyone in the home was using.
Later, on the streets, I gave in. It is difficult to keep clean on the streets.
Everyone is buzzing about the new legislation. It makes sense to me. A lot of people leave rubbish. They relieve themselves outside the structure. They pass urine. I've been sleeping beside a nearby shop. He is unconcerned as long as we do not make a mess.
I was a part of an abusive partnership. I'm being bullied on the streets right now, and there's nowhere safe to sleep. Men will try to get you into their vehicles.
Moreover, it's challenging to stay organized. Items disappear or get dropped. My book bag gave apart and my food stamp card dropped out. It was just returned to me. My wallet is gone. The bag grows heavier with the rain. I slept on a concrete slab around the corner yesterday. I had not slept for three days. I'm worn out.
All I want to do is avoid bad individuals. It's not at all beneficial. I'm requesting God to guide me and keep my kids safe.
I had a husband. I separated from my spouse. For a few years, I shared a double-wide mobile home with a roommate. He let me rent a room. He began to feel unwell. He had cancer, it turned out. I had to move out when his parents moved in to take care of him.
Since July, I've been without a house. All I am trying to accomplish is that.
I use methadone. It is superior to oxycodone and morphine as an alternative. Next Monday, I start to work full-time at a call center.
What makes renting unstable homes the most difficult? The terrifying prospects for the future
This week saw the implementation of more than 30 new state laws, such as the prohibition on public sleeping and the necessity of flood disclosures in real estate transactions.
Why this matters The legislation will establish new guidelines for some government entities and affect the rights and limitations of Floridians.
July saw the implementation of over 180 new regulations, such as one that forbade the releasing of balloons and one that stopped local governments from mandating outdoor workers to wear heat-resistant clothing.
If a crime remains unreported to law enforcement, rape kits, and DNA evidence must now be maintained and held anonymously for a minimum of 50 years. Law enforcement had no guidelines before on how long to keep kits.
A new selection of specialty license plates, which will benefit related nonprofits, is available for drivers to select from. One of the plates is dedicated to the memory of Jimmy Buffet.
When completing registration forms, drivers with disabilities can voluntarily disclose to the state if they live with a handicap. The legislation covers parents of diagnosed children.

We presence before you about news topic on Experts continue to debate the Lucy Letby case. The Lucy Letby narrative takes place in two parallel realms.
Every day in Liverpool, during the public investigation of her case, one can be observed. The question of Letby sculpability is resolved here. Why Letby was able to injure infants for such a long time is the judge's inquiry.
In the alternate reality, skepticism has grown regarding the evidence that was used to condemn her. Prominent statisticians and medical specialists are speculating that Letby could have been the victim of an injustice.
A debate outside of the court system casts doubt on Letby's guilt, creating an absurd situation where the system has determined that she is a serial murderer.
As journalists, we have spent years following Lucy Letby's story through two trials, an appeals procedure, a public investigation that is still going on, and the mounting controversy around her conviction. Together, we have authored a book on the case and produced two Panorama documentaries, the most recent of which features fresh material and features interviews with prominent opponents and the prosecution's now-suspended experts. The film will premiere on Monday.
Letby was found guilty of killing seven infants and making seven more murderous attempts, making him the most prolific child murderer of the modern era. Still, opinions on her situation are divided.
If someone had witnessed her injuring a newborn at the Countess of Chester Hospital's neonatal unit, the case may have been easier to handle, but none did. Neither DNA nor CCTV evidence pointed to an incriminating motive. The circumstantial evidence was used against her.
During her trial, a grid that listed the occurrences in the case with 'X's to indicate which staff members had been on duty was one of the most important papers. For all of them, Letby was the sole nurse on call.
However, statisticians have mocked the grid. They contend that the grid is essentially a visual trick on its own because we don't know how the "suspicious events" listed on it were chosen or which ones were left out. The jury was also informed of two suspicious instances that did not appear on the grid and occurred when Letby was not at work.
If there was undeniable medical proof of 24 crimes, Lucy Letby's presence at every instance would undoubtedly be devastating.
That brings us to the central point of the Letby case: To what extent does the medical evidence support the notion that the newborn deaths and collapses were crimes rather than random occurrences?
The most contentious evidence were claims that Letby killed infants by giving them air injections in their blood. An air embolism, or obstruction brought on by an air bubble in the blood circulation, would result from that.
Letby would have needed to use a syringe to inject air into the infants' intravenous lines in order to do this. These are typically used to provide sick or preterm neonates with feeding, medication, and hydration.
After being used, syringes in hospitals are disposed of and burned. They are almost undetectable as a murder weapon.
The issue is that Letby was not observed doing this. Rather, the accusation was based on a "checklist" of observations made of some of the infants who passed away or fell apart while Letby was there.
The prosecution claims that the babies' condition declined abruptly and without warning. The primary medical expert witness for the prosecution was retired consultant pediatrician Dr. Dewi Evans. "under care of Babies don't suddenly drop dead" he informed us.
Numerous people displayed unusual skin discolorations that the unit's medics had never seen before. A few baby screams.
Moreover, the infants did not react to resuscitation as the doctors had anticipated. Some had air in their blood vessels, according to post-mortem X-rays.
Dr. Shoo Lee, one of the authors of the report, later testified on behalf of Letby in her failed April 2024 appeal of her convictions. He claimed that none of the skin blemishes on the infants in the Letby case demonstrated evidence of an air embolism.
Prosecution attorneys couldn't agree. Additionally, they emphasized that skin discoloration was only one item on their checklist for air embolism and that they had never claimed that a certain type of skin discoloration constituted evidence of air embolism on its own.
While few specialists have seen all of the medical data, some have openly criticized the prosecution's air embolism argument. One expert who has is retired consultant neonatologist Dr. Mike Hall, who assisted Letby's defense during her initial ten-month trial. Although Dr. Hall did not testify in court, he informed us that, in his opinion, there was no indication that the air visible in the infants' X-rays was brought there while they were still alive.
These kinds of expert disagreements, some of which have turned personal, are currently transpiring over the medical evidence in the Letby case.
The prosecution claimed that this checklist was a reliable method of determining air embolism. However, how sturdy was it? The scant research on air embolism in infants was easily acknowledged by the specialists for the prosecution. Two Canadian professors' 1989 study report was one of the most thorough examinations. The paper's description seemed to bolster the prosecution's case, especially when it came to the allusions to skin color changes linked to air embolism. However, there were only 53 cases in the research, and the babies' conditions that were reported in the publication were not exactly the same as those in the Letby case.

Election results in Florida: Marijuana and abortion rights amendments fail-Florida Amendment 4.
On Election Night 2024, Florida's pro-abortion Amendment 4 faced defeat, despite Florida's requirement for 60 percent electorate assent for ballot measures to amend the state constitution. This highlights the need for a broad consensus before taking an issue out of the ordinary legislative process. Ron DeSantis, a pro-life leader, put significant political capital on the line to defend his position, demonstrating the importance of leadership and the courage of conviction in states.
The Florida electorate has decided on constitutional amendments, with results indicating that marijuana and abortion rights amendments failed, while other amendments were passed, highlighting on-going legal wrangling.
Restores partisanship to district school board elections by listing candidates' political parties alongside their names on the ballot, just as it was before to voters' decision to make them nonpartisan in 1998
The Florida constitution declares hunting and fishing to be "preserved forever as a public right" and states that these activities are the best way to "responsibly manage and control fish and wildlife”
Up to three ounces of marijuana, with a maximum of five grams in a concentrated form, could be used and possessed by anyone who is 21 years of age or older (with certain limits). Dispensaries might sell marijuana without requiring a medicinal marijuana card.
Legalizes abortion up until fatal viability which is typically seen as occurring between weeks 23 and 24; additionally, it would permit abortions when a medical professional deems them necessary to safeguard a patient's health.Read from Florida government website
Governor/lieutenant governor, attorney general, chief financial officer, and agricultural commissioner candidates would no longer receive public money.
Reduces local governments' revenue by linking some homestead property exemptions to inflation rates
According to The Associated Press, a ballot initiative that would have guaranteed abortion rights under the Florida Constitution was unsuccessful, dealing a significant blow to advocates who had hoped to restore widespread access to the operation in the third-largest state in the US.
Amendment 4 received 57 percent of the vote, more than the 60 percent needed to pass. Abortions "before viability," which is often around 24 weeks of pregnancy, would have been permitted. Most abortions are prohibited in Florida after six weeks, which is before many women are aware that they are pregnant.
Although not surprising, the loss ended the abortion rights organizations' winning run on ballot measures, which had been continuous since the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade in 2022. In all seven states that held ballot questions on the topic before this year, including California and Kansas, voters supported abortion rights.
However, none of those prior bills received more votes than 59 percent in conservative states; below the level Florida needed to succeed.
Read More... on Florida Amendment 4. The rejection of the Florida legislation represents a political win for Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who had emerged as the leader of a well-organized and well-funded opposition effort. He used significant state resources and a large portion of his political capital to fight it. Mr. DeSantis and his supporters fiercely fought another ballot item that would have legalized marijuana in the state, and it was also lost.
In 2022 and 2023, Mr. DeSantis and Republican lawmakers passed legislation prohibiting abortions after 15 and 6 weeks, respectively. Previously, women from other Southern states with more stringent regulations would go to Florida, which permitted abortions up to 24 weeks.
Knowing it would be a tough fight, the Yes on 4 campaign's organizers gathered almost $100 million to place the item on the ballot and to run a campaign for it. Florida has a higher 60 percent requirement, even though other conservative states have enacted identical legislation. According to surveys, support was close to 60% on Election Day.
The nonpartisan Yes on 4 campaigns was aware that it would require the backing of Republicans and Democrats as well as nonpartisan voters. Despite their backing for anti-abortion candidates, organizers thought that enough Republican-leaning people would cast yes ballots.
After first indicating that he could be in favor of Amendment 4, former President Donald J. Trump, who lives in Florida, had spoken against it.

According to CNN station WTHR, Richard Allen was convicted in the well-reported Delphi murder trial of two charges of murder and two counts of felony murder.
According to the prosecution, Allen slit the throats of 13-year-old Abigail "Abby" Williams and 14-year-old Liberty "Libby" German in 2017 and left their bodies next to a path in Delphi, Indiana. Before Allen's arrest in 2022, the case remained unsolved for over five years.
Before rendering a decision, the jury deliberated for almost 19 hours. Prior to the verdict, Special Judge Frances Gull stated, "People aren't going to be happy regardless of what the verdict is," according to the original source of WTHR.
According to WTHR, Richard Allen sat impassively when the guilty judgment was read. After consoling him, his attorneys shackled him and escorted him out of the courtroom. Until Allen was sentenced on December 20, the court maintained the gag order preventing any parties involved from discussing the case.
According to The Associated Press, Allen may receive a sentence of up to 130 years in jail.
According to WTHR, Libby's grandma, Becky Patty, sobbed as she embraced family members and exited the courthouse. As the guilty decision was delivered, the crowd outside the courthouse burst into cheers and clapping. According to CNN station WISH, several onlookers held placards expressing their support for Allen, while others said they wanted a guilty conviction.
"This isn't over at all," Kathy Allen, Allen's wife, told WTHR as she walked out of the courtroom.
After all 17 days of testimony, the 12 member jury, which had been sequestered during the trial, started deliberating Thursday afternoon. The judge gave them instructions to consider Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until they arrived at a decision.
Prior to Carroll County Prosecutor Nick McLeland's closing arguments, which walked the panel through the evidence and testimony provided during the trial, Gull gave the jurors their final instructions Thursday morning and asked them to "consider the facts," according to CNN affiliate WTHR.
Richard Allen, known as 'Bridge Guy', is the primary suspect in the murder of Abby and Libby, as evidenced by a video from Libby's phone. The video, taken from Libby's phone, shows a man walking along the Monon High Bridge Trail.
According to WTHR, McLeland showed jurors the "Bridge Guy" video, which he claimed recorded the last moments of the kids' lives, a tape of Allen allegedly confessing to his wife over the phone while incarcerated, and horrific pictures of the girls' bodies.
Allen could be heard telling his wife "I did it." "I murdered Libby and Abby"
Learned Defence lawyer Brad Rozzi argued that acquittal should be possible due to the lack of evidence, timeline, and false confessions.
Rozzi told the jury Thursday, "The defense believes what you've heard over the last few weeks is more significant than what you're hearing today," according to WTHR.
The defense argued that Allen's past confessions were false and a result of his mental health deterioration, and no physical evidence linked him to the killings.
The murder investigation in Delphi began on February 13, 2017, when Abby and Libby hiked on Delphi's Monon High Bridge. When the two girls did not meet Libby's father that afternoon, they were reported missing. Their bodies were discovered the following day, partially buried by sticks, and both dead from throat wounds.
The suspect's audio and video recordings from Libby's smartphone contributed to the case's increased public awareness. "Guys, down the hill," is heard on the audio, and a man walking on the bridge with his hands in his pockets is seen in the video. Days after the murders, police released the audio and a still image from the video, and they named the "Bridge Guy" as their main suspect. However, the investigation stalled for over five years until Allen was taken into custody in 2022.
Allen, working at a CVS in Delphi, a tiny town, was discovered to have set up shop at the crime scene shortly after the girls were believed to have been murdered.
According to the CNN station WLFI Carroll County Sheriff Tony Liggett stated that Allen "got lost in the cracks" despite the tip. Police matched an unspent cartridge found between the girls' bodies to a handgun they seized during a search of Allen's residence, leading to Allen's arrest around a month after the tip was received.
Allen was charged with two charges of murder while committing or trying to commit kidnapping five days after his arrest on October 26, 2022. Two further murder counts were eventually added to the indictment by the prosecution.
Very little tangible evidence connects Allen to the case, despite his confessions: According to a state DNA expert who testified, neither Allen's nor Libby's DNA was discovered at the crime scene or on objects taken from his house.
The 40 caliber unspent bullet discovered alongside the girls' bodies, which a prosecution expert claimed matched Allen's weapon was the focus of prosecutors' attention. The defense questioned why more pictures of the cartridge were not taken and suggested that the bullet was not reliable.
WRTV claims that it could have originated from a law enforcement officer's firearm.
Additionally, Libby's cellphone's audio and video recordings of "Bridge Guy" have been compared to Allen's by the prosecution. WRTV reported that Indiana State Police Master Trooper Brian Harsh claimed to have listened to over 700 of Allen's prison phone conversations.
McLeland informed from the jury that Richard Allen was a "Bridge Guy" "He abducted them and then killed them"
According to WRTV it could have come from a police officer's weapon.
Allen has also been likened by the prosecution to the "Bridge Guy" submitted audio and video recordings captured on Libby's smartphone. The prosecution's witness, Master Trooper Brian Harsh man of the Indiana State Police, stated that "the voice of the 'Bridge Guy' is the voice of Richard Allen WRTV reported that a Harsh man claimed to have had over 700 of Allen's phone chats while incarcerated.
Richard Allen, McLeland told from the jury in the court was a "Bridge Guy. " "He abducted them and then killed them."
